Crisis-hit Canadian PM fends off opposition revolt - 12.04.2008

OTTAWA - Embattled Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper won a political reprieve Thursday by obtaining an unprecedented shutdown of parliament and thwarting an opposition bid to topple his government. After two hours of crisis talks here, Governor General Michaelle Jean agreed to Harper's request to suspend the two-week old assembly until the New Year, stymieing the opposition's move to call a no-confidence vote on Monday. "On my advice, the governor-general has agreed to prorogue parliament," said Harper, after a week of turmoil when all three opposition parties banded together to try to oust his ruling Conservatives. The main Liberal opposition led by Stephane Dion spearheaded the move to unseat the government, accusing Harper of failing to shore up the nation's plunging economy. Dion's coalition had scheduled a parliamentary vote of no-confidence on December 8, leaving Harper fighting for his survival just seven weeks after being re-elected at the head of a minority government in snap elections. But the governor general's decision now gives Harper some breathing space to try to resolve the crisis. It also allows Finance Minister Jim Flaherty time to prepare a budget for January 27 that is expected to undercut the coalition's call for a fast-tracked economic stimulus package. "We are planning here the quickest federal budget in history," Harper said. "I don't think (the opposition) could produce a budget any quicker than this. "So I would simply encourage them to engage with the government," he said. "What I think Canadians want us to do is work on the economy and work together." The opposition coalition however stood by its position. "Nothing has changed for us," said Dion, adding "unless he makes a monumental change" which includes presenting parliament with "a real recovery plan" for the economy.By Michel Comte

The man who made history - Barack Obama

The United States presidential election of 2008, held on Tuesday,November 4, 2008. The Republican Party nominated John McCain, the senior United States Senator from Arizona as its nominee; the Democratic Party nominated Barack Obama, the junior United States Senator from Illinois, as its nominee.Obama won the number of electors necessary to be elected President. He will be inaugurated on January 20, 2009.The 2008 election was the first time in U.S. history that an African American won a majority of electoral votes.
The man who made history, was born in 1961 in Honolulu to a Kansas-born mother and a Kenyan father who had met at the University of Hawaii. History will record that this election was about many things including: a liberal main stream media that influenced the vote by clearly favouring a candidate in every possible way; an economic collapse for which America made the other candidate, and the other party pay no matter what; an American public that wanted change so badly it chose charisma and idealism over character and experience.

30-te godisnjice Mature

TORONTO - Stephen Harper arrived at his high-school reunion in Toronto with a coterie of RCMP officers, campaign buses, and the national media in tow.He delivered a speech Saturday night to more than 1,000 former classmates attending the 30th anniversary party for Richview Collegiate Institute. The prime minister joked with his former classmates that 30 years after graduating, he still doesn't have a steady job.He told the crowd that his favourite thing about being prime minister is getting to travel to many countries. Harper said he has come to appreciate how lucky Canadians are.He also noted that whether he wins or loses this election, he knows his family would not be imprisoned, and that Canadians can take pride in having one of the world's longest-running, stable democracies. Zijah Sokolovic

Izabranom riječju, gestama, pravim slapovima isprazne rječivosti i prije svega tišinom koja govori, preplitanjem grube komike i mjestimično snažne aforistično zgusnute meditativnosti, umjetnik nas, preko ubjedljive sudbine pojedinaca vodi do porazne spoznaje o jedinki i svijetu, a onda bezmalo katarzično rasterećuje uvijek aktualnih osobnih i društvenih stega.
